JNPT container terminal privatisation -- Is there merit in unions' objections?
UNIONS ARE not expected to support privatisation. So protests against privatisation are seen as natural reactions by employees, impelled as they are by the fear of losing their jobs. Therefore, it would be natural for the Ministry of Surface Transport to dismiss last Friday's token strike by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) employees as a knee-jerk reaction against the plan to privatise the container terminal.

Bangladesh woos N-E States
BANGLADESH IS in favour of early opening up of the road route between Dhaka and Agartala. It is also keen to expand the river routes to promote trade relations with India's north-eastern region.

Vizag port for venture with IOC for SBM
ENCOURAGED by the indications of a significant surge in oil traffic in the coming years, the Vizag port is keen on early completion of the proposed single buoy mooring (SBM) project, which would facilitate evacuation of oil cargoes from very large crude carriers (VLCCs) on a regular basis.

Dredging up troubled waters
IT IS a near classic case of two government agencies working at cross-purposes, posing needless hardships for ports.

Will it `Concor' the road transport?
IN 1989, Container Corporation of India (Concor) began operations in the South by converting two railway goods sheds in Bangalore Cantonment and Coimbatore. Today, its activity in the region covers not only transportation (both rail and road), but also managing container freight stations (CFSs).
