To study pest resistance in pigeonpea -- $20,500 funding for pigeonpea pest research
THE Osmania University and the International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) here have bagged a $20,500 proposal to study pest resistance in pigeonpea. The project will be funded by the Andhra Pradesh-Netherlands Biotechnology Pr ogramme through its co-ordinating agency, Institute of Public Enterprises, Hyderabad.

Rs. 15-cr gene sequencing machine to be acquired
THE country will acquire a gene sequencing machine, costing approximately Rs. 15 crores, to accelerate the pace of decoding chromosome-11 of rice, which has been assigned to it as part of the global rice genome project.

Rainfall deficient in Gujarat, Rajasthan -- G'nut, coarse cereals under stress
ABOUT 28 out of the country's 35 sub-meteorological sub-divisions have so far had normal to excess rainfall during the current monsoon season beginning June 1 and the prospects for kharif crops are generally bright as of now, barring that for groundnut i n Saurashtra and coarse cereals in the Western Rajasthan belt.

ITA projects recovery in tea production
A STATUS paper brought out by Indian Tea Association has projected tea production in the current year at 840 million kg, a level that will mark a recovery from the steep decline in 1999, when production at 805 mkg was 65 mkg down on 1998.
