Arecanut imports unlikely after duty hike: Campco
ACCEDING to the demand of the `arecanut farming community', the Centre has raised the import duty on arecanut from the existing 35 per cent to 100 per cent, ostensibly to check the `slump' in arecanut prices. The notification to this effect which was iss ued on July 7 states that `circumstances exist which render it necessary to take immediate action' in `the public interest.'

Gold may bounce back after BoE sale
GOLD traded lower steadily for most of last week and lost about 1.8 per cent, with the official Friday, July 7 price of $282.85 per ounce. Modest selling and weak demand pushed the prices down. Silver largely tracked gold to end the week softer at $4.97/ oz., a decline of 0.6 per cent week-on-week.

ZENECA Agrochemicals Ltd is examining the possibility of venturing into rice biotechnology in India, and will soon assess and identify the specific areas of focus, according to its Managing Director, Mr. Henry F. Briggs.

Cashew cultivation in Maharashtra picking
ENCOURAGED by the incentives offered by the Maharashtra Government more and more people are taking up cashew cultivation in the State. As a result the total area under cashew is expected to go up to around 1.32 lakh hectares by 2001.
