Emission warranty system for auto sector mooted
Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, Sept. 26
THE governmental and ministerial bodies concerned should bring into force `Emission Warranty Systems' in the auto sector, the Director, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), Dr Anil Aggarwal, said here on Monday.
Addressing the South Asia briefing session of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Dr Aggarwal said that auto companies would henceforth be required to issue certificates detailing the emission standards. Although the two-wheeler sector had responded
positively, the rest of the auto industry was still quite apprehensive over the issue. Such a system was already prevalent in most of the developed countries, Dr Aggarwal said.
He said that insufficient knowledge on environmental issues, weak regulations, poor governance and weak civil society in India were major factors responsible for non-compliance of the environmental norms by industry. ``There are almost nil finances alloc
ated for scientific research and ecological security in India which is certainly a matter of concern,'' he said.
GRI is a long-term, multi-stakeholder, international undertaking whose mission is to develop and disseminate globally applicable sustainability reporting guidelines for voluntary use by organisations reporting on the economic, environmental and social di
mensions of their activities.
