Corporate
BHEL clarifies
This is with reference to `Alstom hopes to notch up $300-million turnover' (Business Line, December 1). Dr Krishna Pillai, CEO, Alstom India, is reported to have said that since 1992 (when the policy of purchase preference to public sector enterprises wa s introduced), all the power station contracts of the NTPC have been secured only by BHEL, giving rise to a perception that BHEL secured these contracts only on the strength of the public sector preference and not on the basis of its competitiveness. Th is unfortunate perception is not based on facts.

Technology
Recognising talent
This refers to `Searching for innovators' (Business Line, December,06). Many centuries ago, India gave the world the numerals 1 to 9 together with the momentous concept of zero (sunya). For some inexplicable reason, these are known as Arabic (and not Ind ian) numerals.
