Poompuhar exhibition in Mangalore

MANGALORE, Jan. 23

IN an attempt to popularise the `traditional' arts and crafts of Tamil Nadu, the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd - Poompuhar - has organised a week-long exhibition of its ware in Mangalore.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, representatives of Poompuhar's Bangalore unit said the Corporation, which has completed its silver jubilee and currently has a network of 20 showrooms, registered a turnover of Rs 13 crore during the last ye ar.

The turnover of the Bangalore unit alone was Rs 84 lakh and the Corporation hopes to do business worth Rs 10 lakh during the course of its `crafts mela' here which is on till January 30.

Poompuhar has a total of eight production centres engaged in producing `traditional crafts' such as bronze icons, brass lamps, sandalwood carvings, Tanjore art plates and granite stone sculptures.

The exhibits at the `crafts mela' here include bronze replicas of the Chola and Pallava periods, Thanjavur art plates and paintings, leather products, pottery, palm leaf products and sea shells among other items.
