Floating dry dock by HSL

If everything goes as per schedule, Hindustan Shipyards Ltd (HSL) should finalise the contract for constructing a 3,000-tonne floating dry dock with one of the 28 firms from Russia, Ukraine, German, the UK, South Korea and Singapore, that have bi d for the job.

The tender floated by HSL, it is learnt, offered three options to the bidders, namely supplying a second-hand dry dock, building a new dry dock and constructing the dock at HSL's yard. Majority of the bidders are believed to have opted for constructing the dry dock in their own yards and towing it to HSL. The floating dry dock will help HSL boost ship-repairing activity which is growing steadily.

From Rs 40 crore in 1996-96, HSL's ship-repair business posted an impressive jump to more than Rs 100 crore in 1999-2000. The figure in the current fiscal is estimated to touch the Rs 125-crore-mark. -- Our Bureau
