CDLB in a financial whirlpool
THE Calcutta Dock Labour Board (CDLB), which is facing an acute resource crunch following a sharp drop in cargo throughput at Calcutta Dock System (CDS), recently tabled a Rs 69.88-crore 2001-02 budget, projecting an operating deficit of Rs 12.06 crore. Kandla port panics at weak wind
IT WAS more of a panic reaction. The Meteorological Department's forecast that a severe cyclonic storm would hit the Gujarat coast gave the Kandla Port Trust (KPT) authorities so much of a scare that they declared the port closed for a few days. As it tu rned out, the storm weakened and, mercifully, no damage was caused to the port, or for that anywhere along the coast.

Antagonistic contradictions
IF THE goings-on in our country are any guide, one is led to believe that the equation between shippers and shipping lines is, to use a Marxian phrase, one of antagonistic contradictions. The common complaint of the shippers is: The shipping lines revise freight rates unilaterally, without warning and without even caring to discuss with the shippers. The shipowners, on the other hand, feel that holding discussion serves no purpose as the shippers will always oppose any freight increase proposal.

TAMP's recipe for making regulator more efficient
THE proposal to convert the Tariff Authority for Major Ports (TAMP) into an appellate tribunal, as suggested by the C. Babu Rajeev Committee, has evoked stiff resistance from none other that the TAMP Chairman himself.

Vizag air cargo service to take off soon
THE groundwork is being done for large-scale cargo transportation by air from Vizag in the near future. Although air cargo has been picking up from Vizag, its full potential has not been tapped yet because of unavailability of international flights from the city.

CoPT allots land to manufacturers -- Concrete plans to move cement
THE coastal movement of cement through Kochi Port is set to receive a big boost as several manufacturers propose to acquire plots of land within the port area to set up handling, storage and packaging facilities.
