Economic slowdown
In `On the wrong trajectory' (Business Line, August 3), the author has highlighted an important factor in the economic slowdown _ the cut-back in consumption by the middle-classes in view of unfavourable signals, such as interest rate cuts, slump in the share prices, and so on.

Brain drain
The article, `Brain drain' (Business Line, August 7) focusses on the sorry state of employment opportunities available for professionals in India. With unemployment problem looming large due to population explosion, technological advancements resulting i n machine power substituting manpower and unemployment that would arise due to VRS schemes offered even to employees having more years of service, it is an uphill task for the powers-that-be to address fully the problem of brain drain.

Wasting surplus food
It is shocking that the damage in handling fruits and vegetables is worth Rs 50, 000 crore and that better handling can save up to one-thirds of this wastage, which is almost Rs 17 crore. One does not understand why cannot the government ensure safety of the produce.
