Tobacco Bill

The Parliamentary Standing Committee has done a commendable job of its report on the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Bill.

Its recommendation, according to which tobacco products other than cigarettes should be included in the Bill's purview, is a welcome step towards curbing tobacco consumption.

Tobacco consumption in the form of cigarettes is only about 15 per cent.

The rest 75 per cent of the consumption is in the form of chewing tobacco and bidis.

And tobacco consumption in these forms has been proven to be as harmful, if not more, as cigarette smoking.
