DoT may seek CVD waiver on handsets

Hema Ramakrishnan

NEW DELHI, Jan. 1

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is planning to back the cellular industry's demand to remove countervailing duty on imported handsets. The issue would be taken up during the pre-Budget discussions between DoT and Finance Ministry this week, said officials.

Extension of the five-year tax holiday under Section 80 IA of the Income Tax Act to State-owned PSUs — MTNL and BSNL — too will figure in the pre-Budget proposals. Currently, the five-year tax holiday is available only to telecom service companies that have commenced operations on or before March 31, 2000 (which was extended up to March 2003 in this year's Budget).
