Rlys plans 3rd bridge over Krishna river

VIJAYAWADA, Jan 1

THE third rail bridge across the Krishna river has been taken up by the Railways at a cost of Rs 42 crore and is expected to be completed in 18 months, Mr Satish Kumar, Divisional Railway Manager, said.

Speaking to newspersons on Tuesday, he said that three smaller bridges would have to be constructed as a part of the work and the main bridge would consist of 12 spans of 89 metres each. It would facilitate free and fast movement of trains at Vijayawada junction.

Mr Kumar also said that work on the revival of Kakinada-Kotipalli railway line had started, but the proposed single line between Kakinada and Pithapuram in East Godavari (intended to bring the port town on the main line) had to get the clearance of the CCEA.

"There is no need to fear that the proposed single line would be used only for the movement of cargo. Another line could be laid later between the two towns."

A proposal has been made to introduce another passenger train between Kakinada and Tirupati in view of the rise in the number of pilgrims, he added.
