Karnataka fishermen's rally on Jan 15

MANGALORE, Jan 1

THE fishermen of coastal Karnataka are planning to organise a rally on January 15 to focus attention on the impact of the continuing `fish famine' on traditional fishermen.

The rally is to be organised under the auspices of the Dakshina Kannada Mogaveera Mahajana Sangha and the Akhila Karnataka Meenugarara Parishath, and will involve 52 fishermen's organisations in the State's coastal regions.

The decision to hold the rally was taken at a recent joint meeting of the fishermen's associations.

The traditional fishermen of coastal Karnataka have been trying to focus public attention on the implications of what they consider to be a `fish famine' which has badly affected their catch in recent times.

According to them, the famine has been caused primarily due to the widespread prevalence of deep-sea fishing along the coast.

As part of their rally, the fishermen plan to submit yet another memorandum to the Chief Minister, Mr S.M. Krishna, demanding relaxation in recovery norms for loans, continuation of the reduction in sales tax on diesel for fishermen, reduction of Central excise, increase in the quota of kerosene for traditional boats and check on industrial pollution affecting marine life along the coast.
