BANGALORE, Jan. 4

COMMERCIAL vehicle major Volvo, through its subsidiary Volvo IT, has announced a strategic agreement with Bangalore-based MindTree Consulting for outsourcing software development and services for its global operations.

Announcing this, Mr Ulf Nordqvist, Managing Director, Volvo India Pvt Ltd, said the agreement with MindTree was initially for 150 man years within a period of three years and could be extended later.

As part of the agreement, MindTree will be working with Volvo for a wide range of enterprise software development such as mainframe applications enhancement and maintenance, ERP applications and a host of eBusiness applications such as content management and applications using Microsoft and Java technologies.

``This deal is expected to be one among the top ten deals of the year,'' said Mr Ashok Soota, Chairman and CEO, MindTree Consulting.

``Volvo has the potential to be one among MindTree's top three customers,'' he said.

``It is a matter of pride for us to be associated with a leading global automotive company. This is a testimony to our capabilities of delivering software services and solutions in the enterprise area,'' said Mr Soota.

Volvo has chosen to partner with MindTree after evaluating other software companies in India, Malaysia and Poland.

As part of the deal, projects would be executed both onsite and offshore and almost at all locations whereever Volvo has a presence, said Mr Soota.

Volvo was expanding its business in India by bringing its IT division, which had a major potential for expansion not only in India, but also in China and other Asian countries, said Mr Nordvisqt.

However, Volvo IT had no plans in the short-term to set up its operations in India, he said, adding that Volvo was also planning to outsource engineering competency.
