Stevedoring services make waves in Vizag port

Amit Mitra

WITH the cargo throughput registering a steady increase at Vizag port, enabling it to emerge as India's premier port last fiscal, stevedoring services have correspondingly climbed new heights during the last few years.

Stevedoring and clearing and forwarding services constitute a vital component of the performance of the port, as any shortfall in these services would make a significant inroad into the port's cargo throughput.

During the last few decades, a string of stevedoring companies and C&F agents have sprung up at Vizag. "If we are expecting our throughput to cross 40 million tonnes this fiscal, this is being made possible largely by these companies,'' said a senior port official.

One of the companies that has set a new trend in this sector is Prathyusha, one of the few companies in the shipping sector with ISO 9002 certification from DNV, the Netherlands.

Starting with 0.4 million tonnes in 1989-90, the company handled 2.07 million tonnes in 1999-200 and 2.22 million tonnes this fiscal, so far.

Among the records the company has to its credit is the unloading of 40,590 tonnes of coking coal in a single day on September 17 1999, which continues to be unbeaten so far.

In fact, some of the companies have been in existence before the port came up. One of the oldest is P V Ramana Murthy and Sons, which was established in 1867 at Bheemunipatnam, which had a minor port. Shifting to Vizag port in 1922, after Mr P. Mallikarjun Rao, son of the founder, opened a branch in the city, the company is the steamer agent for almost all ships with North Korean flags that come to the port. Another such company is the International Shipping Corporation, which was established in 1951.

Some of these companies, such as Pratyusha and KRN Sons, also offer warehousing and logistic services. Pratyusha, which has two warehouses measuring a total of 1.5 lakh sq ft, in fact, plans to expand its warehousing space in the coming months.
