Thiruvananthapuram, Jan. 27

KERALA has bagged the ``best tourism performing State'' award for 2000-01 instituted by the Union Ministry of Tourism. Kerala is winning this award for the third consecutive year for excellence in tourism. Earlier, the State had won the award in 1998-99 and 1999-2000.

Kerala bagged two more awards in the categories of the ``most innovative use of information technology'' and the ``best tourism film''.

Also, awards for best resorts in the four-star and three-star categories went to the Kerala-based Spice Village, Thekkady, and Marari Beach, Mararikulam, respectively.

According to Mr Alkesh Kumar Sharma, Director, Kerala Tourism, the ``best tourism performing State'' award was given to Kerala on the basis of the State's promotional and marketing efforts, investment facilitation drive, infrastructure development, performance of State-owned tourism complexes, human resources development and quality tourist arrivals, both domestic and international.

The award for the ``most innovative use of information technology'' was won by the Kerala Tourism Web site, www.keralatourism.org, and CD-ROMs titled ``Ayurveda, the Mantra of Niramaya'' and ``Kerala, the Green Symphony''.
