HYDERABAD, Jan. 28

THE country's first computer forensics laboratory to provide digital evidence in tackling cyber crimes has been inaugurated here.

Developing expertise to collect, examine and analyse data retrieved from computer storage media in a legally defensible mode will be the basic focus of the new laboratory, which has been inaugurated by, Mr V.N. Singh, Director-General, Bureau of Police (R&D).

Computer-related crimes such as hacking into networks, manipulating data, pornography, misuse of the Internet by terrorists were among the priority issues to be tackled by the laboratory, Mr Singh told newspersons.

Though there is no study or estimate of the extent of computer-related crimes in India, Mr Singh drew attention to the US, where a 1999 study put the costs of computer-related crimes at $10 billion.
