ICAR aid for TNAU project

COIMBATORE, Jan. 29

THE Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has sanctioned Rs.5.18 lakh to the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) to monitor the changes in the soil organic matter (SOM) status in a multiple cropping system of ragi-maize under long-term fertilisation. The project is for a three-year period.

Emphasising the need for maintaining the SOM balance, the TNAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr S. Kannaiyan, said `usually, but not always', the organic matter levels in the soil declined when placed under cultivation.

``When nutrients are not replenished by organic or fertiliser inputs, the crop yields decline.''

Dr Kannaiyan said the study aimed to assess the turnover of organic matter into the soil in an ongoing long-term fertiliser experiment in which 26 cropping cycles comprising 76 crops had been raised since 1972.
