SAIL pact for Haldia berth

KOLKATA, Jan. 29

STEEL Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has signed a 30-year pact with International Sea Ports (India) Ltd (ISPL) to use exclusively berth no 4A at Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) of the Calcutta Port Trust.

ISPL had earlier been given that berth by HDC on a build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis, according to a SAIL release. The berth is expected to be ready for use by 2003.

According to sources at SAIL's Central Marketing Organisation here, the public sector unit exports around two lakh tonnes of steel annually through HDC. It imports nearly three m.t. of coking coal through HDC, which is around 45 per cent of its import of coking coal.

Sources said the choice of the port of discharge for coal imports from Australia and New Zealand was based on railway freight rates from the ports to the respective steel plants. Haldia port was best suited for supplies to Bokaro, Durgapur and Rourkela plants of SAIL, they added.

The deal was signed in New Delhi by Mr A.K. Singh, Director, Commercial, SAIL, and Mr A. Ramakrishna and Mr K. Shah, Directors of ISPL.
