Spices & Condiments Cardamom up on short supply Our Bureau
KOCHI, Jan. 30 CARDAMOM prices moved up on active buying support from domestic buyers and exporters at various auction centres in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Superior quality bold 8mm, which was at short supply fetched Rs 850-900 a kg while the AGEB Rs 740-750, AGB Rs 680-690, AGS Rs 670-680 and AGS 1 Rs 650-660 per kg. Price of fine colour bulk remained above Rs 700 a kg. There was very good demand from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Kanpur and Pune for bold and medium varieties while the sick varieties found market in Berhampur, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad, market sources said. They attributed the demand to thin inventory with the traders and short supply from both indigenous and foreign sources. Export enquiries were pouring in from West Asia, the Gulf, Japan and Malaysia. During January 2, the exports were estimated to be around 60 tonnes while the total exports during the current season were put at about 750 tonnes. It was expected to pick up in February and March. The total sales through the auction centres during the period stood at 78.5 tonnes at the average price of Rs 647.5 per kg. The maximum price of Rs 812 was recorded at Vandanmedu on January 25 while the minimum Rs 281 at Kumily on January 23. During the current season up to January 28, 2,300 tonnes were sold through auctions in Kerala and Tamil Nadu at the average price of Rs 600 per kg.
