BANGALORE, Jan. 31

THE Mauritius President, Mr Cassam Uteem, has said that he will take up the case for the introduction of a direct air-link between Mauritius and Bangalore.

Mr Uteem's assurance to lend help in this regard came during a luncheon meeting organised by the Confederation of the Indian Industry (CII) and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) here on Wednesday.

Answering questions on the issue, Mr Uteem said Air Mauritius was already operating six flights a week from Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. However, a direct link with Bangalore assumed importance in view of the city's prominence in information sector.

India has assured its help to the island nation in setting up a strong IT infrastructure. The Indian Government has extended a line of credit of $100 million to assist Mauritius in the IT sector. The Software Technology Park of India (STPI) has also signed an agreement with Mauritius to help that country set up world-class academic training institutes.

Stating that the air-link with Bangalore would also help increase tourist flows both ways, Mr Uteem expressed his country's keenness in strengthening IT sector as a new avenue for faster economic growth and employment generation. Mr Uteem, who leaves on Wednesday for Hyderabad after a two-day stay in Bangalore, made an appeal to the captains of industry to choose Mauritius as a destination for investment.
