Adidas to boycott leather from India, China

Our Bureau

KOLKATA, Feb. 1

ADIDAS-SOLOMON, manufacturer of sports goods, has said it would not use leather originating either from India or China until these countries crack down on transport and slaughter-related cruelties against animals.

A press release issued by the animal rights activist group PeTA said this had been communicated to them by the Germany-based company in a letter dated January 29, 2002.

Another department store chain, Kohl's, too had said that it would boycott Indian leather till animal conditions improved. Germany is the single largest importer of Indian leather.

The release regretted that the Council for Leather Exports, India's apex body, continues to sidestep the issue of animal cruelty, barely addressing the problem , despite giving assurances to the PeTA.
