Textiles `Budget will have good news for textile sector' Our Bureau
COIMBATORE, Feb. 8 THE Union Budget will have some "very positive proposals" for the textile sector, according to the Union Minister for Textiles, Mr Kashiram Rana. Refusing to elaborate further, he told newspersons that the textile sector should be given relief to bail it out of the current recessionary trend and make Indian products more competitive. He also said that the depreciation of the rupee would definitely benefit exporters. On access in EU markets, he said that the indications were positive. Mr Rana also said that a team had gone to Brussels to study the market, after the visit of a Minister from the European Union. "We are hopeful," he added. On the duty imposed on raw cotton, the imports were not much this year as the domestic cotton was available at reasonable rates following a bumper crop, he said. "Bt cotton is good, but it is up to the Union Agriculture and Environment Ministry to decide." Mr Rana also expressed satisfaction over the implementation of the TUF scheme in the processing and spinning sectors. The demands of various associations including that of the ICMF on various issues were "their opinion. We will take decisions in the interest of the textile sector as a whole."
