Ballooning deficits

In `Ballooning revenue, fiscal deficits' (Business Line, February, 9) the author has cautioned the Government and suggested bold steps to cut expenditure in the few weeks left before March 31. In this context, the international credit rating agency, Moody's warning (`India heading for a debt trap', Business Line, February 9) is also to be taken seriously.

In `Cast it wide' (February 9), the author has made several suggestions to widen the tax base. The taxation policy should aim at curtailing black money and introduce procedures that do not give room for corruption. The administrative machinery from top to bottom, should be made compact and modern, in order to take quick decisions, and implement them.
