Economy `Liberalisation should not hurt domestic industry' Our Bureau
KOLKATA, Feb. 22 WHILE liberalisation has made India Inc more competitive, it would be imperative for the Government to ensure that unbridled liberalisation of imports is not detrimental to domestic industry, according to Mr K.C. Mittal, Managing Director of Birla Corporation. Delivering the keynote address at the inaugural session of the annual symposium of National Institute of Management Calcutta (NIMC) held here today, Mr Mittal said the transition to full-fledged liberalisation should be gradual and such that domestic industry is able to integrate into the process seamlessly. Unless this is ensured, domestic industry would be affected. Mr Mittal stressed the importance of appropriate infrastructure, fiscal policies, managerial and marketing skills and labour laws in a globalised scenario. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sujit Kumar Basu, Vice-Chancellor of Visva-Bharati University, called for better work culture in the country. Corruption and unequal distribution of wealth were among the other issues, which need to be tackled, he said. Mr Basu, who spoke of the role of Visva-Bharati in spreading management education, said the lack of innovation has hindered the growth of Indian corporates.
