TN for business orientation to agri sector

Our Bureau

CHENNAI, Feb. 22

THE government of Tamil Nadu is rethinking its strategies for agricultural development. Instead of spending so much acreage on paddy — a commodity the State could buy from the Food Corporation of India cheaper — the farmers should be encouraged to shift to other crops, the Chief Secretary, Mr P. Shankar, has said.

Speaking at a seminar on `Demystifying WTO' organised here by the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), Mr Shankar said that agriculture would need to be given a "business orientation".

Observing that "all commercial crops (farmers) are suffering because of fall in prices", he said, "we find we need not devote so much land for paddy".

Accordingly, the government is examining the feasibility of encouraging the cultivation of medicinal herbs and floriculture, he said.
