Service charges on private stadia

Our Bureau

BANGALORE: Sports associations with their own stadia in Bangalore are to be brought into the service charge net, following an amendment to the Bangalore Municipal Corporation Act.

The statute stipulates service charges on all those areas in an arena left untouched by the self-assessment scheme for property tax. A final guideline has yet to be framed on the proposal, which will cover organisations, institutions, sports bodies and associations that claim tax exemption under the `charity clause'.

"We will have to differentiate between private organisations promoting sports and State associations with their own premises promoting the game. However, genuine cases seeking exemption, will be considered on merit, according to an official.
