Bangalore scientists honoured

TWO Bangalore-based scientists from the Aeronautical Development Agency received the Padmashri awards from the President, Mr K.R. Narayanan, recently, for spearheading the Light Combat Aircraft programme.

According to the citation, Dr Kota Harinarayana, programme director LCA, one of the two recipients of the award, has with " his dynamics, charisma and single-minded devotion led to the success of the project. He brought together the aeronautical community in the country and achieved the landmark resulting in the first flight of the LCA in January 2001.''

Dr Kota, as he is affectionately referred to, was also the chief designer of the LCA programme, which took 17 years to reach flight-testing stage. The citation added, "due to his efforts, India succeeded in developing a state of the art high technology fighter of world class." The country could save hundreds of crores of rupees due to his efforts.'' The citation also mentioned his efforts in improving the MiG-21 aircraft.

Dr N. Balakrishnan, also from the ADA, was lauded for his efforts in the area of supercomputers and information security.

The citation said, " he made seminal contribution in the area of computation, space electronics, radar meteorology and polar metric radar, super computing and high performance networking and information security.''
