Smart cards for vehicle owners

Our Bureau

BANGALORE: The State Transport Department plans to introduce smart cards to replace paper documents for the ownership and registration of vehicles.

The smart card, to be issued by the Road Transport Office, will have information about the vehicle and its ownership, embedded in a microchip. The data contained in the chip can be viewed on an access machine, which would be linked via satellite to a centralised data centre located in Bangalore and all RTOs across the State, according to Transport Department sources.
