Training teachers the Intel way

NEW DELHI, March 30

FOR the past two years Intel Corporation has been teaching teachers how to use technology in the classroom, now it is catching them even earlier, at teacher training institutes.

Intel's $100 million investment in its global `Teach to the Future' programme has extended its scope in India to include teacher training programmes for four institutions, including Mumbai's SNDT University, Hyderabad's Osmania University, Mysore and Pune University.

The initiative which has the support of the Central and State Governments will ensure that teachers who pass out with a Bachelors in Education will be empowered to teach through computers in the classroom.

In the last two years, Intel has trained over 48,000 teachers in 20 cities across the country in order to combat the barriers they face in effectively integrating technology into their classroom curriculum. In 2002 they plan to train another 152,000.

" It makes good business sense for us to invest in education, besides promoting good corporate citizenship," said Timothy G. Saponas, President of the Intel Foundation and Manager, International Education Programmes, who was in India to attend the education fair, Education India 2002.

Intel has also been working with the Government to integrate computers in classrooms across cities and rural towns. It's programme has been adapted by the two Central Government School Boards, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti and five State Governments including the Chennai Corporation, Delhi, Gujarat, Karnataka and Maharashtra.

"The programme helps us to broaden our base and build a technology savvy population. It also helps us to sell our technology set of products," said Saponas as he explained that Intel has involved itself with education from the kindergarten to graduation.

At the school level the company conducts an extensive global science talent search. For those who are not fortunate enough to receive formal education or are drop-outs, it runs a Computer Club House project.

The teachers training course that has been initiated in India includes pedagogical practices in creating student publications, creating student Web sites, evaluating student samples, netiquette, ensuring student safety when using the Internet and of course, managing students in a computer lab setting.
