CCL output touches 20-year high

Our Bureau

KOLKATA, April 3

CENTRAL Coalfields Ltd (CCL) has achieved a record production of about 33.8 million tonnes (m.t.) of coal, which is said to be an all-time high for the last two decades. The production in the previous year was about 31.7 m.t.

The total off-take during the year was about 33.3 m.t. as against about 32.8 m.t. previously The off-take could have been more if the Railways had supplied more wagons, claimed a CCl source.

CCL was identified as a sick company following huge losses over the past few years. Its loss in the year 2000-01 was Rs 790 crore. This year, the losses are estimated to come down to Rs 110 crore.

The impact of wage arrears increased the margin of loss in 2000-01 by about Rs 425 crore. Thus, the cumulative loss for the current year has been reduced by more than Rs 250 crore.
