D Link upbeat on software R&D in India

BANGALORE, May 2

D LINK India Ltd, a subsidiary of D Link Corporation of Taiwan, has renewed its thrust on its software R&D activities in India.

The company has moved to a larger office in Bangalore and hopes that the new centre will let it ramp up operations faster to meet the growing needs of the parent company. The company plans to source a lot of R&D work from India. ``We must continuously invest in R&D and embedded software. With out worldwide operations growing and our strong emphasis on R&D, D Link India will be assured of an increasing stream of assignments from us,'' said Mr A.P. Chen, COO, D Link Taiwan.

The development centre here has to its credit the software that goes into an IP phone.

``We already have many models of IP phones but the company felt that there was a need for a low cost mass product for markets such as India and China,'' explained Mr J.V. Avadhanulu, Director (Software Technology).

The new IP phone from D Link has one processor instead of the two that most companies use, bringing prices down. This means that the software needs to be more complex and this is what the India centre has achieved.

The new phone set with the basic features of an IP phone would cost somewhere around Rs 3,000, though the price had not been fixed as yet, he said. This is still high compared to the ordinary analog handset, which is available for Rs 500-600, but around 4 to 6 times cheaper than the other IP phones in the market.
