Apollo opens centre for nervous system disorders

CHENNAI, May 2

INTRODUCING niche products for specific medical ailments is the latest strategy of the Apollo Hospitals Group. The group has launched the Apollo Health Centre in Chennai, which is supposed to be the first of its kind in India, will focus on "contemporary rehabilitative care" for patients who have suffered a paralytic stroke or are victims of cerebral palsy and other central nervous system disorders.

The Apollo Health Centre comprises a physiotherapy clinic and the Apollo Asha Biofeedback Clinic. While the former will provide rehabilitative services covering several medical disciplines such as orthopaedics, cardiology, neurology and gynaecology, the Apollo Asha Biofeedback Clinic, according to a senior spokesperson of the Group, is "a revolutionary treatment for the rehabilitation of the neurologically challenged."

The biofeedback methodology, which has been evolved by Dr Bernard S. Brucker of the University of Miami, is supposed to be a process by which active cells in the brain or spinal cord take over the functions of the dead cells that were earlier controlling parts of the body. "This helps the patients gain better head, postural and mobility control," says the spokesperson. The spokesperson also adds that Dr Brucker has treated over 8,000 patients using this technique, with a success rate of 98 per cent.

The Apollo Asha Biofeedback Clinic has been launched in collaboration with the Asha Foundation, which is an international organisation to help neurologically challenged people. The biofeedback treatment is priced at Rs 30,000 for 20 sessions, whereas the individual sessions are priced at Rs 2,000 per day.
