Standards & Benchmarks Industry & Economy - Petroleum `Marker' to detect fuel adulteration Our Bureau
MUMBAI, May 2 OIL majors Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation have introduced a system to detect adulteration in petroleum products at depots in Mumbai and Delhi. According to an IOC release, the new `marker system' can covertly mark petrol and diesel to detect adulteration. The depletion in the marker concentration can be tested later to detect any adulteration. The system is expected to cost one paise per litre towards cost of marker, service charges for testing and hiring the detecting device. "The system has been initially introduced in a couple of IOC and HPCL depots in Mumbai and Delhi each. We plan to introduce this in the National Capital Region and later extend it across the country," an Indian Oil official said. The system is the result of research carried out by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) at the behest of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs to review fuel adulteration, the release said. The research group, headed by Dr A.K. Bhatnagar, Director (R&D), IOC, included members from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, BIS, Indian Institute of Petroleum, Indian Additives Ltd, IIT Chennai and Concert, a Chennai-based NGO, the release said.
