Floriculture Karnataka urged not to auction floriculture units Our Bureau
BANGALORE May 2 THE Agricultural Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) Chairman, Mr Anil Swarup, today urged the Karnataka Government not to put up floriculture units in the State for auction even as an International Flower Auction Center is being set up for their benefit. Mr Swarup was speaking at the National Agricultural Machineries Exhibition after laying the foundation stone for the proposed International Flower Auction Center in Bangalore, which is expected to be completed in the next 18 months. APEDA is investing Rs 3.57 crore into this project for which the State Government has provided some 6 acres of land. Mr Swarup said the State-owned financial institutions have started liquidate the floriculture units financed by them which have become unviable for certain reasons, even while an independent study done by the Tata Economic Consultancy Services (TECS) has suggested that there was a need for rehabilitation for some units. A rehabilitation package is also being drafted by the nominated nodal agency IDBI, he added. "There has been a drastic change over the last few years since these units came up while there is a need for the FIs to take a relook at the viability of the units'' he added. The agencies should evaluate the viability of the sick units before liquidating them, he said. Lot of investment has been done by the Government to create various infrastructure facilities such as cold-storages, marketing centre in Holland and the latest being the proposed international auction centre, he said. An estimated 50 per cent of the units in the State are financed by the Karnataka State Finance Corporation and the Karnataka State Industrial Investment and Development Corporation. Mr Swarup said he was looking forward for two proposals from the Karnataka Government to set up agri-export zones for flowers and rose onions in the State. Setting up of AEZ for flowers would help the growers and exporters to avail certain benefits, he added.
