Anti-dumping India major user of anti-dumping measures Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, May 3 INDIA is one of the key players among the WTO members, making effective use of anti-dumping measures in a way that is transparent and compatible with the multilateral trade rules as also rules and regulations laid down by the laws of the land in this regard. Disclosing this in its 2001-02 annual report, the Directorate-General of Anti-Dumping and Allied Duties (DGAD) said India initiated 30 cases during the year under review, which is the highest number. Out of this, the maximum was against exporting companies from Singapore at 11 followed by China with 10 cases. There were six anti-dumping cases and seven anti-subsidy cases initiated by other countries against India during the period. Releasing the report here, the Union Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr Murasoli Maran, said the functioning of the DGAD was an illustration of how a WTO-compatible tool could be effectively used to safeguard the interest of the domestic industry Later, addressing a news conference, the Designated Authority and Additional Secretary, Mr L.V. Saptharishi, said that a scrutiny made in the report of the impact of imposition of anti-dumping duty in respect of the five products probed and studied by the directorate reveals that the domestic industry has been able to enhance its production capacity, consequent to the imposition of anti-dumping duty.
