Announcing this, the Minister for Local Administration, Mr Cherkalam Abdullah, said that the trophy was being given in recognition of the successful implementation of developmental programmes and efficient administration.

The Kozhikode City Corporation has bagged the Swaraj Trophy for the best city corporation. Among municipalities, Attingal was adjudged the best and Tirur, second best.

Mr Abdullah also said that the trophy was introduced in 1997 to encourage healthy competition in administration and development activities among local bodies after the decentralisation of power and planning was completed.
