Power Centre agrees to provide 200 MW for Karnataka Our Bureau
BANGALORE, May 3 THE Union Government has agreed to provide about 200 MW of power to Karnataka to ease the on-going critical power supply situation, the State Energy Minister, Mr Veerkumar Patil, said here today. This is expected to help avoid further load-shedding, Mr Patil said. The Centre has agreed to provide about 100 MW from Kayankulam in Kerala and 50 MW from the Eastern grid and another 50 MW from its unallocated quota, Mr Patil said. This development follows the meeting between the Chief Minister, Mr S.M. Krishna and the Union Power Minister, Mr Suresh Prabhu. According to Mr Patil, Andhra Pradesh is already supplying about 100 MW of power to Karnataka and efforts were on to get an additional 100 MW from the Tata Power Company in Maharashtra. "Since the power has to be wheeled through the Maharashtra State Electricity Board, negotiations were on,'' Mr Patil said adding that the power from Centre and Maharashtra was expected to flow into the State grid by May 15. The Chairman of the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd (KPTCL), Mr V.P. Baligar, said the additional 400 MW of power supply would only help maintain the existing supply without enhancing the load shedding. KPTCL has already resorted to two-hour scheduled load shedding in urban areas, while in the rural areas the load shedding is to the extent of six hours. Overall, an estimated Rs 80 crore is required to purchase about 400 MW of power, which the State Government plans to provide to KPTCL, Mr Patil added. While efforts to get about 100 MW from Orissa have failed, the State is planning to source about 100 MW from Tamil Nadu, Mr Patil added.
