Karnataka: Call for awareness on clean environment

Our Bureau

BANGALORE, May 3

Organised efforts are needed to create awareness on the value of clean environment and its protection, the Governor, Ms V.S. Ramadevi, has said. Inaugurating a two-day meet on environment, Parisara 2002, here, she said mass awareness programmes, pollution control and environment protection were the need of the hour.

Mr Upendra Tripathi, Chairman, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, said that residents of Bangalore should strive to create their own water body.

Dr C.G. Krishnadas Nair, Chairman of the meet, said that environmentalists were not against development.

Although motor vehicles created air pollution and mining of precious metals destroyed hills and forest, both motor vehicles and mining were essential for the development of society. Afforestation and the use of new technology could help in saving the environment.

He further said that one aim of the meet was to draw a syllabus for university education on environment matters.

Prof E.S. Dwarkadasa, Convenor of Parisara-2002, said that the Foundation for Advanced Material Education aimed at spreading education on appropriate use of metals and materials such that their after-effects would not disturb the equilibrium of the environment.

The technical workshops at Parisara-2002 covered water pollution, environment management, air pollution, afforestation, planned development around a polluting industry, controlling the infusion of heavy metals, pesticides, fertilisers into sources of water resources, reuse of waste water, health problems among industrial workers, use of IT to efficiently monitor and control environmental degradation and the use of simple methods to tackle everyday pollution.

Scientists, environmentalists, industrialists and educationalists presented nearly 25 papers during the two-day meet.
