Punj Lloyd gets Dabhol maintenance contract

Our Bureau

THE construction major, Punj Lloyd Ltd, has bagged the `care and preservation' contract for the Rs 15,000-crore assets of Dabhol power plant. The six-month contract, valued at Rs 11.94 crore, has been awarded by the consortium of financial institutions led by Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI).

Essentially, Punj Lloyd has been hired to provide services which are required for minimum preservation and maintenance of the assets at the Dabhol complex. This includes work for the protection of the power plant during the monsoons, upkeep of the infrastructure, maintenance of the select housing facilities, in-plant roads and back-up power services.

The Dabhol project, it may be recalled, has not been generating electricity for some time now as the case is sub-judice. At the same time, any piece of equipment, when not in use, becomes vulnerable to wear and tear which calls for constant maintenence.

The consortium led by IDBI had invested huge amounts for the development of the project, which are yet to be recovered. Keeping this in mind, the maintenance contract has been awarded, as otherwise, the equipment may get clogged and rusted and involve a huge cost to make them operational again.
