Karnataka: 7 more crops notified for insurance cover

BANGALORE, June 3

KARNATAKA has introduced seven new crops for insurance cover under the National Agricultural Insurance Scheme for kharif 2002.

The new crops are sugarcane, cotton (irrigated), cotton (rain-fed), sesame, potato, onion and chillies, in addition to the 11crops notified last year.

Announcing this, the State Agriculture Commissioner, Dr S. Subramanya, said that GIC, the agency handling crop insurance in Karnataka, had already started disbursing Rs 20 crore of last year's claims. Farmers could collect the money from their respective nodal banks. Last year, the claim for crop damage and loss was Rs 132.93 crore, of which Rs 82.13 crore had been accepted after investigation by GIC. Claims for all crops except toor have been cleared. In the case of toor, GIC wanted more information before clearing it, said Dr Subramanya.

The banks had been instructed to disburse the money before the next sowing begins, Dr Subramanya said. This is expected to encourage farmers to pay their premiums and get more farmers to participate in the scheme. Last year's crop loss (including unsown area and sown area) was an estimated Rs 1,800 crore. However, claims were only Rs 132.93 crore, as only around 10 per cent of the farmers in the State are insured. Six lakh farmers out of a total of 68 lakh farmers were covered under the scheme, said Dr Subramanya.

The insurance is provided for an area and not for individual farmers. Last year, most of the crops were insured at the taluk level. This year, some of them (irrigated paddy, rainfed paddy, ragi, irrigated maize, rainfed maize, jowar, bajra, toor, groundnut, and sunflower) will be notified at the zilla parishad level. Some changes this year would be the inclusion of crops

"There is demand to extend the cover to the gram panchayat level,'' said Mr Subramanya. The State has planned to do this for toor in Gulbarga on an experimental basis.
