Safeguards for textiles against Chinese `threat'
Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, June 6
THE Government is working out the details of the mechanism for imposing textiles safeguards to protect the domestic industry from injury or threat thereof arising from imports from China.
Addressing a CII workshop on Textiles here, Mr S.N. Menon, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, said that "it is possible that certain cheap imports of textiles and clothing products from China or a sudden surge of these imports could hurt our domestic industry''.
He pointed out that China had as part of its accession process to the WTO agreed to the member countries having certain flexibilities for imposition of product specific transitional safeguards and textile safeguards against imports from China.
Stating that India needs to draw lessons from the Chinese experience which has made it a dominant player in the textile and clothing sector, Mr Menon highlighted that China aims to export $ 60-65 billion worth of textile products in 2005.
