China plans on track, says Satyam

V. Rishi Kumar

HYDERABAD, June 13

SATYAM Computer Services Ltd has reiterated that its mainland China plans are on track and there is no change in its strategy to penetrate the market as a part of company's move to spread its geographical reach.

``We feel that China has a strategic importance and offers considerable business opportunities for us and our outlook on our operations in China remains positive,'' company sources said.

Putting at rest speculation about change in plan, the company reiterated that the opportunities relate to:

  • Its global customers' China operations

  • Better delivery capability to Japanese and Korean markets and therefore better business out of these markets

  • China's internal markets, and

  • Ability in the long run to source talent from the Chinese pool.

Following a recent statement by Infosys', the country's major IT services firm, about its move to reconsider and defer China development centre plans, there were apprehensions that other companies could review their move to tap the Chinese market.

It may be recalled Satyam Computer was among the first IT services firm to announce its plan to enter mainland China. Once this Chinese software development centre is completed, this will be the company's 16th such facility worldwide.

In the Asia-Pacific Region, Satyam had opened offices in China, Malaysia and Hong Kong and is in the process of opening an office at Korea. The Shanghai office of the company was commissioned earlier this year at Shanghai Pudong Software Park, to serve China-related markets.

In order to broadbase reach and move away from a pronounced US market orientation, the company is aiming at tapping new opportunities. Its objective is to increase geographical reach and handle business from China and Taiwan.

According to the company report, the thrust on increasing global reach is resulting in significant addition to customers from the non-US region. Last fiscal, Satyam increased its market presence in 43 countries.
