Alliances & Joint Ventures Pawan Hans signs MoU with CHC International Ashwini Phadnis
NEW DELHI, June 30 IN an effort to be a more aggressive player in the global helicopter market, Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd (PHHL) has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the world's largest helicopter operations company, the Canada-headquartered CHC Helicopters International. "The MoU will not only help PHHL look for business worldwide, but also see the two parties co-operate in other areas like systems upgrade. Not only will CHC help us get contracts abroad, the agreement allows us to approach CHC for helicopters in case we require machines for fulfilling contracts in India also,'' the company Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Anurag Goel, told Business Line hours before relinquishing charge. The MoU also allows for collaboration with ACRO (a sister concern of CHC) in select areas of maintenance, besides collaborating with CHC, Scotia and Aberdeen for restructuring the operations centre in Juhu. Meanwhile, some officials of Pawan Hans will be travelling to various facilities of CHC for specialised visits relating to safety and maintenance issues. Besides, the company will work closely with CHC for the introduction of integrated safety management system and maintenance error management system among others. Besides, joint teams of experts from PHHL and the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will be sent to CHC International followed by the visit of CHC safety experts to India for an in-depth study and make recommendations regarding safety and quality assurances. Senior officials are hopeful that with the tie-up with CHC, Pawan Hans will be in a position to offer support systems of international standards and attract more business for the country. The company has already signed a MoU with the South Africa-based Titan Aviation to scout for business opportunities in Africa. "Titan Aviation can bid for contracts on behalf of PHHL in Africa and we will provide them helicopters depending on when the contract is signed and what our requirements are,'' senior PHHL officials said. The officials also indicated that more tie-ups with other organisations were also likely to be announced soon.
Joins select band PAWAN Hans' attempts at going global have received a boost with the organisation being awarded the International Quality Summit award for excellence and business prestige. "The award is considered as the Oscars in the world of business and is definitely a big boost for PHHL,'' official sources told Business Line. With this award, the company joins the rank of global `Fortune 500' companies such as BAT, Coca-Cola, Sheraton, K-Mart and IOC, sources said. The award has been given to PHHL to recognise leadership quality, innovation and excellence on the basis of comprehensive performance criteria and considerable market research. Pawan Hans had plans to acquire four light and 10 medium capacity helicopters during the Tenth Plan Period, the Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Syed Shahnawaz Hussain, said recently. The Minister said the new acquisition would be finanaced from internal resources. Further, the company was acquiring two medium capacity helicopters for which orders had been placed after obtaining the Government approval. Mr Hussain said techno-economic evaluation was already under way for PHHL acquiring two light helicopters.
