`India must be assertive at Codex forum'

Our Bureau

INDIA should make its position felt at the international forum of Codex in formulating standards for food, Dr S.R. Gupta, Assistant Director-General of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, has said.

In his keynote address at the workshop on `Strengthening food safety and quality systems in India' organised by the CII at the National Institution of Nutrition here, he stressed the need for the development in the country of food safety and quality standards of international level.

Dr Gupta said developing countries should voice their concern at the Codex Alimentarius Commission, so that their interests were reflected in framing standards. He wanted the industry and scientific institutions to come up with detailed data to support India's case in international forums.

A Web site would soon be launched from the newly set up National Codex Resource Centre to make people aware of Codex activities, he added.

Dr Ghafoorunissa, Officer-in-Charge of the National Institute of Nutrition, stressed the need for harmonising national standards with Codex.
