ASHOK Leyland has set up `Ennore data centre' for centralised data processing.

All manufacturing units and the marketing division will be inter-connected and linked to the data centre through leased lines and radio, according to the company's annual report for the year 2001-02. The company estimates the cost of the project at Rs 52 crore.

The project will enable "enhanced communication and uniform data sharing", it says.

"Development of e-commerce with dealers and suppliers has been completed and will be ready during 2002-03," it says.

Ashok Leyland Ltd will also set up "a centralised R&D facility near Chennai". The centre will be commissioned shortly.

"All chassis engineering activities will be carried out from this centre," the annual report says.

The company already has R&D facility at Vellivalchavadi near Chennai, complete with testing equipment and CAD/CAM facilities. It also does some R&D activity at other centres such as Hosur.
