Railway zones

This refers to the editorial, `Zones of contention' (Business Line, July 13). Purely for parochial considerations, the new zones were announced in 1996 against expert opinion. With revolutions in communications and information technology managing, large zones are now much easier than in the past.

A funds-starved government should have withheld the formation of the new zones. Now it finds itself on a sticky wicket of its own creation.

Before long, one foresees a case made out for `Regional Boards' on the plea that the Board at Delhi finds it difficult to manage 16 zones and five production units. This will trigger another round of parochial bickering.
