Chitravati rail bridge to be rebuilt for Rs 23 cr

HYDERABAD, July 15

THE Union Minister of State for Railways, Mr Bandaru Dattatreya, told presspersons here on Monday that the Irrigation Department's proposal to raise the level of the Ghandikota reservoir in Cuddapah district from the present 209 metres to 212 metres would, if implemented, submerge six km of railway track.

He requested the Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, to take an early decision on the matter for taking suitable measures. He said the Chief Minister had promised to convey his decision in about 10 days. Priority would be given to the construction of 15 road over-bridges at different places and the State Government also had deposited its share of money for the purpose.

The Chitravati bridge near Kondapuram-Regadipalli on the Renigunta-Gooti line had outlived its existence and the Railway Board had approved the rebuilding of the bridge at a cost of Rs 23 crore, he added.

Work on the multi-modal transport system (MMTS) for the twin cities was going on according to schedule and the first phase of the project would be commissioned on November 1 despite constraints of land acquisition. The State Government had to sort them out and release Rs 18 crore towards its share of cost. It had given Rs 17 crore out of Rs 35 crore, Mr Dattatreya said.

He said the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation's (APIIC) move to displace small farmers in Nanakramguda village from their lands was causing hardship to the farmers and he requested the Chief Minister to ensure that the corporation looked for alternative sites in neighbouring villages for development.

Regarding the shifting of Monda market from the present place to new premises, he said the new market building was ready by 1999 and efforts were on since then to persuade traders to shift into it. While it was agreed to collect the land values of 1996 from them, the Marketing Department had issued a GO seeking payment of the current values. As this development was unexpected, he wanted the Chief Minister to iron out irritants and facilitate early shifting of traders to the new marketplace.
