MUMBAI, July 18

TATA Consultancy Services (TCS) has entered into a strategic alliance with Toyo Engineering Corporation and its IT subsidiary company Toyo Business Engineering for promoting its packaged software for Japanese financial institutions.

TCS also inaugurated its Japan Development Centre in the city of Yokohama, a news release said. The centre is part of the strong initiatives by the company to expand its business interests in Japan, the second largest market in the world, said the release.

``TCS has been focussed at enhancing its presence in the Asia Pacific region and Japan forms a very critical part of this plan,'' it said. TCS has a total staff strength of 100 in Japan where it has had its presence since 1987. With the new centre, TCS will be able to establish an organisation that will offer customers consistent local support by bilingual engineers familiar with Japanese and English, said the release.

Toyo Engineering has project management expertise in engineering projects and will supplement TCS's knowhow in the Japanese market.

The needs of the Japanese market are very different from the rest of the world, said Mr. Girija Pande, Regional Director, Asia-Pacific region, TCS. The company will accumulate business knowledge as well as knowledge in system areas peculiar to Japan, he said.

TCS has set up development centres for Japan in the cities of Kolkata and Delhi as well. Its centre in Hangzhou, China will also undertake services for the Japanese market.
