Modi resigns; seeks Assembly dissolution

Our Bureau

GANDHINAGAR, July 19

THE nine-month-old Narendra Modi Government submitted its resignation to the Governor, Mr Sundar Singh Bhandari, on Friday and recommended the dissolution of the 10th Gujarat Legislative Assembly. Mr Bhandari has accepted the Cabinet's recommendation and has asked Mr Modi to continue till alternative arrangements were made.

The Gujarat Assembly, as per its tenure, had time till March 3, 2003.

Talking to the media here immediately after returning from his meeting with the Governor, Mr Modi blamed an atmosphere of instability that had taken root in the State as the main reason for the decision to quit. Mr Modi blamed the `anti-Gujarat' lobby for trying to bring shame to the people of the State. Striking a stridently parochial note, Mr Modi contrived to link the anti-Narmada lobby with those who were trying to portray the people of the State as murderers and killers to the world.

"It is a conspiracy against Gujarat and its people. Rumours were spread to demoralise the police forces, divide the administration and create an atmosphere of mistrust. The hatred towards Gujarat is revealed by attempts made to portray even the Gujarati dailies as guilty. Attempts are going on even today to save the Godhra killers. All those who came rubbed salt into the wound," Mr Modi said.
